Oomari

Level: Advanced
Despite the 2 tick travel advantage, the Oomari find most other planets to be poorly suited to their species, making early game expansion costly and slow. Later in the game, battle experience is very useful in making best use of the Oomari combat benefits.

History

Oomari

The Oomari are a species of gelatinous ocean creatures, who look like a cross between a squid and a brain. They are highly intelligent with an average IQ well over 30 points higher than that of any other known species (except the Shy'dow and the Drall, who have never had their IQs measured). Although they evolved as a marine life form, Oomari are easily capable of functioning in non-liquid environments. The Oomari are the only known species to possess limited psionic abilities, but the exact nature of these abilities is still speculative, as the Oomari do not discuss their abilities with others.

It is believed the Oomari are an ancient species. None of the other sentient galactic beings know much about Oomari history, and it cannot be determined whether the Oomari purposefully withhold the information, or whether they themselves know little of it. It is widely believed that the Oomari learned about technology from some other long dead star faring species, as no other marine intelligence has ever achieved star travel on their own.

The Oomari social structure is based on large extended families, which spread themselves across many star systems. Each family unit is formed more by economic interest or service provided, than by bloodline. Typically, there are dozens of families inhabiting each Oomari star system, each family with its own developing business, trade, art form, industry (or two), warfare, biology, industrial production, etc. Oomari who reach the age of maturity may choose join a family other than their birth family if “interests” differ enough. Many families have overlapping areas of interest, which could lead to potential conflict, should both families inhabit the same systems. Conflicts of this nature are typical, and the outcomes range from reforming familial bonds through (for lack of a better term) trade agreements, all the way to open combat if negotiations fail.

Galactic Reputation

Because of their secretive nature, most species are very wary of the Oomari, but their thirst for Oomari engine and propulsion technology far outweighs any threat of conflict, so all galactic species seek to establish ties with Oomari.

Ships

Unique Ship: Warpship
Basic Requirement: Nanotech and Design level 10
Additional Requirement: Engine Construction level 16
**Species Advantages: Ship cost reduction of 30% for engines, ships 30% faster, 2 hour minimum travel time for all alliance ships
***Disadvantage: Decreased accuracy for all ships weapons while Warpships warp back enemy fire.

Being obsessed with speed as they are, the Oomari have made the fastest unique in known Space. During a battle, the Warpship has a slight chance of warping back enemy fire from fighters or missiles when aimed at a unique affected ship. The Warpship is also useful for retreat , as the time required to retreat is halved for unique-affected ships.
