History
The Ji are territorial species of small furry mammals who have refined their biological sciences to an almost god-like level. They are known to be a friendly species who deal peaceably with almost all peoples. Male Ji serve as the bio-scientists, workers and fanatical warriors who protect Ji society. The less numerous females spend their time governing the species, adjudicating disputes and raising the broods of young until they are old enough to be apprenticed into a trade.
The Ji possess little knowledge of mechanics, but where the knowledge is limited to mechanical engines, the Ji were clever enough to create biological "machinery" to rival the mechanical ships of any species. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of Ji bio-scientists was the creation of the Slag. The Slag are a parasitical species which bond with Ji neural pathways to enhance the ability to visualize dimensional space, and to somehow mentally control space to send their ships throughout the galaxy.
The Ji, although almost always friendly, will become very territorial and defend their systems fanatically. About 10 years ago, the Gorgoth learned this lesson the hard way. Historical records indicate a Gorgoth fleet encountered a Ji colony while on a mission at the border of their systems. When the Commander of the Gorgoth fleet met the Ji, he thought they might serve as a delicacy on the Imperial dinner table.
The Commander ordered an attack, and all fighters were launched to the planet surface. Before the Gorgoths realized what was happening, their fleet suddenly found its shields had collapsed, and swarms of thousands of Ji ships issued forth from a planet which had zero neutrino output until only moments ago. The Ji destroyed all but one heavily damaged destroyer which fled back to the Gorgoth home world to report on the Ji threat. The Ji are one of the few species to ever defeat the Gorgoth in a pitched battle. Tensions run high on Ji and Gorgoth border systems, and occasional reports of skirmishes are heard on the news.

The Ji were considered to be very little of a threat until rumor of their success against the Gorgoth became well-known.

The Gateway ship contains at least one Slag/Ji. When merged in a Ji Fleet, the Ji/Slag uses its mind control techniques to fire each weapon as a separate battery, rather than as one large broadside. Unfortunately, this process slows down the ships and makes their position evident, thus lowering their evasion from all weapons.
